The Olympic game is a contest where athletes from all around the world come together to participate and showcase their talents in different sports events. It is one of the most well-known events, one of the best in the world where the best battle against each other to achieve Gold, Silver and Bronze medal for their country, but there are some major issues that many of the athletes face in their career journey, mental health is one of the major issues which is been focused more now but there is another issue which is going on from ages not only in sports but also in other fields that is gender inequality. In this article, we are going to talk about gender equality in the world Olympic Games.

Gender equality

Gender equality is when people from all genders have equal rights and opportunities and where is no bias against any specific gender. Where one gender is not been suppressed under the pressure of another gender which is an issue faced by the people in the world for a very long period. Gender inequality is an issue that is not new to society it is there for a very long time and now is also seen in various other fields. Women are one gender that is suppressed by the male gender in many fields and various circumstances. There are many cases where a person is been discriminated against or pull-down due to his or her gender. There are many instances where women are discriminated against due to their gender when compared to men.

The Constitution grants equality to women, ensures equality before the law, and prohibits discrimination against any citizen on the basis of religion, race, caste, sex or place of birth. It also allows ‘personal’ laws, however, resulting in a dual system that allows forms of discrimination against girls and women. [1]

Gender equality in the world of sports

Gender inequality is also an issue in the field of sports it is seen in many instances so in order to control this the international Olympic committee is working closely in this issue and is trying to bring change through leadership development, advocacy and awareness campaigns, and by appointing more women to leadership roles within the administration and key governance positions. The international Olympic committee says gender equality as Great progress has been made in terms of balancing the total number of athletes participating at the Games, however, many other challenges and gaps remain”. [2]

Until the year 1952 women couldn’t make up more than 10 percent in the world games, until 2012 women were not allowed to compete in every sport and it was not until 2014 that the I.O.C.’s planning agenda included working “to achieve 50 percent female participation in the Olympic Games.” [3]

Recent incidents during the world Olympic Games

In the recent Tokyo Olympic Games, it was seen that surprisingly when the player's name lists were released out by countries like United States, Australia, Britain, Canada, and China it was seen that women athletes were more in count than men in many events. This was the first Summer Olympics in which Britain had 201 female athletes than men who were 175. And it was the first time when IOC permitted players of each gender to bear the flag in the Olympic ceremony.

Conclusion

Gender equality is a topic which has been in debate for a very long time, where it is argued that all genders should be given equal rights and no gender should be degraded and looking into that there is a lot of difference in the Olympic games this year. There is a lot that has changed, female players are getting more opportunities than before, gender discrimination is decreasing little by little, and the ratio of women participating in games is coming in level to male athletes.
